A lot of the groups are sector specific, so if you work in a public library, that group would be excellent for you. I wouldn't hesitate about joining career development group - certainly in the past they have welcomed and helped very new entrants to the profession, so if this is your intended career path, however new you are to it, I'd go for that group. Bear in mind however, I've been working in libraries since 1972 and things do change. I'm still a member but neither the public library nor the career development group are relevant to me. I used to belong to the fore-runner of the career development group. Multimedia Information Technology group is good for that particular area, less so if your main focus is on print materials. Is anyone's main focus on print materials any more? ::sigh:: I miss the old days. Bring back the books on chains. LOL.

I'd say the career development group is particularly relevant for you as a new entrant. You meet lots of people, good for developing your knowledge and network of contacts for referring to if you wonder what others are doing, or if you are looking for a new job, etc. They offer visits to libraries and have talks and free training etc. so well worth it.
I've been on the Health Library Group special interest, and the academia/university group. I'm now a member of the UKeIG, which I think is brilliant. Sure they talk a lot about einformation, as it is the future, and mobile devices etc., but I find the information valuable even if I'm not an active member as such. I think the sub groups are what you make of them, you decide how active you want to be and what you get out of them.

I think I will go with the public library group and the career development group.

ukeig looks interesting and I'll be sure to check their website from time to time.

Starting out new in this field, it feels like there's so much to take in!
